ARTIST BIO : Ernie Maluschnig

I gain satisfaction from creating visually unique, tactile forms out of technically challenging and unforgiving materials. My sculptures evolve from observation of our natural environment and the elements that shape it.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, I have always been inspired and challenged by sport and the outdoors. My 50 year history of working with metal began assisting my father, an Austrian watchmaker and jeweler. I became intrigued by the scope of metalworking through classes at school and began restoration of a Classic car at age 14. Later I qualified as a fitter/welder and worked in a variety of metalwork and engineering jobs.

In 1988 my love of the mountains led me to make a home in Wanaka. Metalworks Wanaka was established in 1997 to combine artistic talents and metalworking skills.

2017 has seen a redirection in my future to focus on my passion for creativity in sculpture.
